Mourayo – Greek for a “fisherman’s safe harbor.” Since antiquity, food has always been a reflection of the Greeks' zest for good life. The famous "symposia" in ancient Athens offered great opportunities for combining eating, drinking, and philosophical discussions, accompanied by singing and dancing, a habit still central to the Greek lifestyle. Our goal is to offer our patrons a healthy and tasty meal made with the best Greek ingredients, enhanced by our very own extra virgin olive oil from Kalamata (0-0.3 acidity); also featuring the famous dry figs and olives from the same region, as well as thyme honey from the Peloponnesian mountains.
We welcome you to "moor" your palate in our Mourayo, the same way Greek fishermen moor their boats in the Aegean mourayos until the winds subside. We offer what Greek cuisine is all about; fresh and unpretentious that mirrors Greece’s terrain of olive and lemon groves, its vineyards and herb fields, fraught with mythological and medicinal significance. Fish, pork, lamb, poultry and game, in many regional variations, combined with nature's goods, provide balanced meals that give the basis to the Greek/Mediterranean cuisine. The traditional diet of Greece has been acknowledged as being healthful and is a diet easily adapted by other populations. We aspire to present an original cuisine concept of this coastal land of blue skies and sparkling blue waters with its thousands of islands. Let us sail you into the Aegean Sea and experience Greek cuisine like never before!
We are located below the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Florida Avenue Northwest in Dupont Circle, conveniently located among Washington's finest hotels, embassies and galleries. A short block and a half walk north of the Q Street exit from the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro Station.
