Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2009 Preview

August 17, 2009

On November 5th - 9th, 2009, DCGreeks.com will host Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2009 here in Washington, DC in association with other established Hellenic organizations that serve the needs of Greek-American young adults nationally and in the DC area.  It is the sponsorship of any number of organizations that will separate this event from any other four-day destination Greek social weekend across the country.  Pan-Hellenism Weekend is based on the philosophy of creating an event that will appeal to Greek-American young adults and Philhellenes over 18 years of age both locally and from across the country, regardless of whether they are in college or graduate school, a young professional, single, young and married, a frequent attendee of national or regional conventions or someone who has never been to a major Greek event.  By keeping the cost of the event low for everyone and inviting any and all Hellenic organizations to participate, it is our hope that this event will be the most inclusive and diverse Greek social weekend we have seen in years.

The key details for the weekend, including the anchor social events have been set.  The Marriott Metro Center, right in the heart of downtown DC and at the hub of all the primary Metro lines, will serve as the official hotel for the weekend and will be the site of the Saturday Night Semiformal Party, the Thursday Night welcoming Happy Hour, and several of the breakout events on Saturday and Sunday.  In order to encourage both out-of-towners and locals to stay at the hotel we’ve secured a special $95 a night room rate for the hotel regardless of single, double, triple, or quadruple occupancy.  The Semiformal Party on Saturday Night will feature the music of Zephyros in the Marriott’s Grand Ballroom with a great selection of hors d’ourves  all night.  The other key about staying at the Marriott will be the short walk to the Friday Night Greek Night at Muse (7th and G) and the Sunday Night Greek Night at Ultrabar (9th and F), both featuring DJs CnD from Detroit.

The open schedule leaves plenty of time for sightseeing and otherwise experiencing all that Washington, DC has to offer, but most significantly allows our co-sponsors to program events on late Saturday/Sunday morning, late Saturday/Sunday afternoon/early Saturday/Sunday evening, not only for their current members, their alumni or former members, but for everyone else in attendance that weekend.   So in many ways, attending Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2009 will be like attending multiple Greek events all at once.   Each co-sponsoring organization will bring its own members to the weekend automatically adding to a larger and more diverse crowd, particularly when this crowd is supplemented with many Greek-American young adults who aren’t members of any of these organizations but will come to Pan-Hellenism Weekend because it will be an easy and fun way to be exposed to many of these groups by simply coming to one place at one time.

So who is invited to participate in Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2009?  Simply, any Hellenic organization that serves the needs of Greek-American young adults, or who is looking to expand its awareness amongst this key demographic.  We have or will be extending invitations to the major Hellenic young adult social and service organizations in the DC area and from around the country.  Added to this mix will be the youth organizations tied to the Greek regional societies representing the diverse parts of Greece and Cyprus.  We have also reached out to the Hellenic Societies of the various colleges and universities in the DC area, the Mid-Atlantic, and other schools up and down the Eastern Seaboard and across the country who will be asked to also reach out to their young alumni as well.  We will also be inviting the mainline Hellenic Institutions, which while not specifically focusing on young adults, are always seeking to reach out to younger members.  Finally, for the sake of diversity, we will be looking to add Greek-American organizations and clubs whose mission isn't necessarily Hellenic, but otherwise are groups where Greek-American young adults get together to share in a common interest.  The combination of all these groups should make for a pretty interesting weekend.  We will be offering incentives to all these organizations to participate in a no-risk sponsorship relationship to encourage their members, alumni, supporters and friends to come to DC and be a part of this amazing weekend.  (Click here for information on how your organization can be included as a co-sponsor of Pan-Hellenism Weekend.)

We ask everyone to check back with DCGreeks.com over the next several weeks for information on sponsors as they’re added, more information on the afternoon/early evening breakout events, and any other surprises that may be in store.
