President Gus J. James, II about the 37th Biennial Salute Weekend, March 10-12, 2006 in Washington, DC.
 
AHEPA will honor retiring members of Congress Senator Paul S. Sarbanes (D-MD) and Representative Michael Bilirakis (R-9-FL).  2006 is the last year both members of Congress will serve their constituents.
 
“We are deeply indebted to these two champions of Greek American issues,” said James.  “Both men have served their constituents with integrity, pride, and compassion and they will be sorely missed.  The evening will represent a salute for outstanding and distinguished public and community service.”
 
James also announced that Mr. George Stephanopoulos, host of ABC News’ This Week will be the Master of Ceremonies for the gala affair. He added that Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios have agreed to be on the speaking program.

“We are delighted to have George participate and we believe he will add the perfect touch to the evening,” James said. “Ambassador Burns and His Eminence have been great friends to the AHEPA family and we are equally thrilled to have them participate.”
 
The weekend events will include the Daughters of Penelope “Salute to Women” reception, a symposium on “The Future of Greek America” by Dr. Charles Moskos, and a tour of the U.S. Capitol. 
 
The Co-Chairmen for the 37th Biennial National Salute are Board of Trustee Nicholas A. Karacostas and Businessman Philip N. Christopher, president, PSEKA.
 
The Col. Peter N. Derzis Chapter 438, Arlington, Va. is the host chapter.  Banquet tickets are $150 per person or $1,200 per table of ten.  Ticket deadline is February 20, 2006.
 
The Hilton Washington, 1919 Connecticut Ave., NW, will be the site for the National Salute. Hotel reservations can be made by calling (800)-HILTONS.  The AHEPA rate is $195 per night plus tax.
