Exhibition Location: : Hillyer Art Space, at 9 Hillyer Court NW, Washington, DC

Fragmented Light consists of original photographic material printed as Platinotypes, a 19th century historic photographic process, which makes use of noble metals (platinum and palladium) to render the paper photosensitive. As a visual and conceptual artist, Maro Vandorou is among few artists in the world who uses the rare Japanese handmade paper Gampi, and advanced methods of digital image making. She photographs with a medium format camera, black and white film, converted to enlarged digital negatives for contact printing.

Maro Vandorou was born and raised in Athens, Greece and came to the United States to pursue doctoral studies. Since 2000 her focus has shifted exclusively to image making, with ongoing training, studies, professional experience and expertise in the emerging field of applying digital imaging and printing technologies to traditional fine art domains such as photography and printmaking. Vandorou is a 2007 recipient of an AHEPA National Education Foundation Grant and a 2008 Individual Artist Project Grant from the Regional Arts & Council, from the city of Portland Oregon, where she currently lives and works.

Hillyer Art Space at 9 Hillyer Court NW, is open to the public Monday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at other times by appointment. Admittance is free. Hillyer Art Space is a non-profit contemporary art exhibition site and is a program of International Arts & Artists, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing cross-cultural understanding and exposure to the arts internationally through traveling exhibitions, programs, and services to artists, arts institutions, and the public.
