Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2010 Preview August 18, 2010
On November 4th - 8th, 2010, DCGreeks.com will again host Pan-Hellenism Weekend (PHW) here in Washington, DC in association with other established Hellenic organizations that serve the needs of Greek-American young adults nationally and in the DC area. Based on the success of last year's event that saw 14 cosponsors from all over the country invite their members, alumni, friends and supporters to DC, PHW 2010 will continue being a destination event for Greek-American young adults and Philhellenes over 18 years of age both locally and from across the country, regardless of whether they are in college or graduate school, a young professional, single, young and married, a frequent attendee of national or regional conventions or someone who has never been to a major Greek event. Recognizing that there's a time and a place for a big ticket event with an exclusive guestlist and that this isn't that weekend, PHW 2010 will stay true to the philosophy that by keeping the cost of the event low for everyone and inviting any and all Hellenic organizations to participate, we can have an event that's not only fun, but as inclusive and diverse a Greek social weekend as possible. The great thing about planning this event from year to year is that while some of the basics don't need changing, there's always room in the schedule to add more. While we're still planning for some surprises particularly when it comes to finding a different venue for Friday's Greek Night, most of the details have been set. In an effort to be closer to Georgetown while still remaining Metro accessible, this year's official hotel will be the Marriott Renaissance Dupont Circle, which despite the name is actually in between the Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods and on the inside looks and feels nothing like a Marriott, as the Renaissance line strives to mimic boutique hotels you'll find in most major cities. (Think W or Palomar.) At $109 a night however, PHW guests won't have to pay boutique hotel prices. The hotel bar which essentially takes up the entire lobby area will play host to the Thursday Night Extended Happy Hour with specials ending at midnight. Saturday Night the focus will shift to the hotel ballroom with an ajoining outdoor patio for our Semiformal Cocktail Party with live music by Apollonia and a fantastic spread of hot hors d'ourves throughout the night. While Friday's Greek Night location isn't finalized, DJs CnD from Detroit will be spinning then and on Sunday Night at Ultrabar. "No Rules Sunday" as it's come to be called provides surprises from the playlist to the guestlist as last year Alexander Ovechin and two other members of the Washington Capitals joined the party. The open schedule leaves plenty of time for sightseeing and otherwise experiencing all that Washington, DC has to offer, but most significantly allows our cosponsors to program events during the afternoons and early evenings for their current members, alumni, and everyone else in attendance that weekend, as well as for us to plan for some surprises. (The scheduling of last year's performances by Angelo Tsarouchas came about in late September, over a month after us announcing the schedule for PHW 2009.) Regardless each cosponsoring organization will bring its own members to the weekend automatically adding to a larger and more diverse crowd, particularly when this crowd is supplemented with many Greek-American young adults who aren’t members of any of these organizations but will come to PHW 2010 because it will be an easy and fun way to be exposed to many of these groups by simply coming to one place at one time. So who is invited to participate in PHW 2010? Simply, any Hellenic organization that serves the needs of Greek-American young adults, or who is looking to expand its awareness amongst this key demographic. We are extending invitations to the major Hellenic young adult social and service organizations in the DC area and from around the country. Added to this mix will be the youth organizations tied to the Greek regional societies representing the diverse parts of Greece and Cyprus. We are also reaching out to the Hellenic Societies of the various colleges and universities in the DC area, the Mid-Atlantic, and other schools up and down the Eastern Seaboard and across the country who will be asked to also reach out to their young alumni as well. We will also be inviting the mainline Hellenic Institutions, which while not specifically focusing on young adults, are always seeking to reach out to younger members. Finally, for the sake of diversity, we will be looking to add Greek-American organizations and clubs whose mission isn't necessarily Hellenic, but otherwise are groups where Greek-American young adults get together to share in a common interest. The combination of all these groups should make for a pretty interesting weekend. We will be offering incentives to all these organizations to participate in a no-risk sponsorship relationship to encourage their members, alumni, supporters and friends to come to DC and be a part of this amazing weekend. (Click here for information on how your organization can be included as a cosponsor of Pan-Hellenism Weekend.) We ask everyone to check back with DCGreeks.com over the next several weeks for information on sponsors as they’re added, more information on the afternoon/early evening breakout events, and any other surprises that may be in store. |
