Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2021
CANCELED AS OF 9/10/2021:
We would like to offer our sincerest thanks to the 200 of you who participated in our second survey over the past ten days! After compiling the results and assessing the current and future COVID environment, we regrettably need to cancel Pan-Hellenism Weekend for a second straight year! While 91% of respondents stated that they would Definitely Attend (73%) or Probably Attend (18%) PHW 2021 in a normal year where COVID-19 wasn't a factor, the percentage dropped to a combined 64% under a proposed format where a limited capacity event would be held in Arlington, VA with a proof of vaccination/negative COVID test requirement; only 38% of respondents said they would Definitely Attend under those parameters. Even taking into account only those respondents who stated they were vaccinated, we saw a huge drop in those stating they would Definitely Attend in a normal year vs. 2021 under the proposed format (74% vs. 43%).
Holding PHW 2021 in Arlington, VA with a self-imposed vaccination/negative COVID test requirement (but where unlike Washington, DC, there is no indoor mask mandate presently in place) was the only way we saw that we could possibly host this event while balancing the comfort, enjoyment, and safety of our guests. We didn't see the solid level of commitment, even amongst our very loyal past attendees, that would make us feel comfortable in hosting the event; we frankly wouldn't be as excited to host an event where we were knowingly limiting your enjoyment of your time in DC. We also can't ignore the reality that even this level of support and interest would understandably drop as we got closer to November as the situation with COVID transmission is more likely to get worse before it gets better. The last thing we would want is to impact anyone's health and ability to enjoy Thanksgiving and the holiday season with their families. While we understand and appreciate the desire for us to host even a scaled-down version of this event, we also need to be mindful of the level of quality and enjoyment that our attendees have come to expect. We now realize that we can't recreate that experience in this current environment while remaining affordable and accessible for our guests, keeping in mind that this event is meant to be a fundraiser for the Greek American organizations which we support,
We hope to be able to bring back PHW in 2022 with little to no restrictions. In the meantime, and when circumstances allow, we'll be looking to host smaller events which would attract a regional and even a national crowd, and welcome any ideas that you might have as to how to make such events fun, accessible, and safe for our guests. Again, we wish we could be sharing better news and appreciate everyone's interest, input, and patience while we struggled with this decision.
After being unable to hold Pan-Hellenism Weekend 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DCGreeks.com is evaluating whether we will be hosting PHW 2021 from November 4-7, 2021 in Washington, DC. This event serves as a major fundraiser for over a dozen Greek American non-profit organizations, and while there are many uncertainties with holding large events this year that involve travel, we want to be sure we are supporting these organizations and continuing to bring this community together. That all being said, the decision will ultimately depend on the comfort, health and safety of our guests and the community at large.
We need your help one more time!
After compiling the results of an initial survey we sent out in July 2021, we've learned that a vast majority of our past and potential attendees, regardless of their vaccination status, would not attend PHW 2021 if they were required to wear masks at indoor events. Given the indoor mask mandate that is now present in Washington, DC, we are evaluating the possibility of hosting the nighttime events of PHW 2021 across the river in nearby Arlington, VA and to limit their attendance to 400 people each. (We typically draw over 600 attendees for each of our Friday and Saturday Night events.)
In addition, the NBA 2021-2022 regular season schedule was released on 8/20/21, and it was revealed that Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks will be visiting the Washington Wizards on what would be the Sunday of PHW 2021, 11/7/2021, at 6:00 PM. We here at DCGreeks.com have been hosting a group outing/Greek Heritage Night since 2016, and are planning on organizing a similar event this year.
That all being said, we are asking that our past and potential attendees of PHW 2021 help us out one more time and fill out a new streamlined 13 question anonymous survey to help us understand your willingness to come to DC this November attend PHW 2021 in light of the current COVID-19 environment, the change in location, and the possible addition of a Greek Heritage Night at the Washington Wizards game.
The data collected from this survey will be used internally by DCGreeks.com to determine if there is sufficient interest from our past and potential attendees in attending PHW 2021 under this revised format, so your prompt and honest responses are appreciated.
All responses are anonymous and no questions will be asked that can be used to personally identify you as a respondent.
We would appreciate responses ASAP and no later than 9/6/21. We'll be making a go/no-go decision and announcement by 9/10/21.
We appreciate your time and we're looking forward to receiving your survey submission. We hope you and your family and friends are staying healthy and safe and that we'll see you at a DCGreeks.com event soon if circumstances allow it.
