In October 1944 in the mountainous regions of Euboea , Balis, a guerilla, saves 70 hostages from a German firing squad in a daring feat. The result of this heroic act is that the hostages are saved but Balis is wounded and falls into the Great Ravine. Certain of his death and in a show of gratitude the inhabitants erect his statue in the village square. Thirty years later Balis happens to visit this particular village and discovers his memorial. But an unpleasant surprise lies in store for him when the patrons of the village coffee house upon hearing his name turn hostile and the local authorities, after beating him up, lock him up in a cell.
