AHEPA To Honor Sarbanes, Bilirakis at Gala Affair
WASHINGTON—“An inspiring and exciting weekend of events awaits,” said Supreme
AHEPA will honor retiring members of Congress Senator Paul S. Sarbanes (D-MD) and Representative Michael Bilirakis (R-9-FL). 2006 is the last year both members of Congress will serve their constituents.
“We are deeply indebted to these two champions of Greek American issues,” said James. “Both men have served their constituents with integrity, pride, and compassion and they will be sorely missed. The evening will represent a salute for outstanding and distinguished public and community service.”
James also announced that Mr. George Stephanopoulos, host of ABC News’ This Week will be the Master of Ceremonies for the gala affair. He added that Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios have agreed to be on the speaking program.
The weekend events will include the Daughters of Penelope “Salute to Women” reception, a symposium on “The Future of Greek America” by Dr. Charles Moskos, and a tour of the U.S. Capitol.
