St. Katherine’s YAL officers for the New Year -- Helen Spanos, Anastasia Sotiropoulos, Christine Varoutsos, and John Spanos Deoudes -- are looking forward to serving on the YAL board this year. It has been wonderful to see both new and familiar faces in church, and we hope that you will take advantage of the exciting range of events that we will be offering in the coming months as well.
Continuing with our monthly charity event, on Monday, March 9th, at 8:00pm, the Saint Katherine YAL will be hosting Deuteri Deutera, in the kitchen of the Meletis-Charuhas Center. Upon completion of the 7pm Compline service in the church -- which we encourage you to attend -- we will have the honor of Fr. Costa joining us in the kitchen to speak with us about Lent.
After a record breaking year of sandwich-making, St. Katherine’s YAL is poised for another year of helping the homeless while having a good time. Our goal for this year is not simply to make more sandwiches, but to get more people involved in this truly worthwhile experience. Please make an effort to bring a new person to sandwich-making this Monday (or someone who hasn’t been to sandwich-making in a while).
Please bring loaves of sandwich bread and packages of deli meats and cheeses in the right amounts to ensure that we do not have any leftovers of bread and meat. The ratio is 2 slices of meat per sandwich, or one slice of meat and one slice of cheese per sandwich. (A typical loaf has 22 slices, or 11 sandwiches, and a typical one pound package of bologna features 14 or 16 slices, but please consult your packaging for exact amounts.) Ideally, each participant should bring seven loaves of bread and eleven packages of meat or a combination of six packages of meat and five packages of cheese; just remember the ratio of 7:11. The combined cost of the bread and meat/cheese should be about $20.00.
If all this math is making your brain hurt, or you don't have time to go to the grocery store beforehand, or cannot attend this event but would like to make a cash contribution to this most worthy cause, please contact Helen Spanos at [email protected] by 5:00pm that Monday night, and Helen will purchase the meat and bread on your behalf.
As always, after sandwich-making, we will go to a local restaurant for dinner.
We also invite you to the Lenten Retreat "Orthodox Spiritual Life and Struggle" held at St. Katherine's on Saturday, March 14th from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Dr. Harry Boosalis, of St. Tikhon's Seminary, will be the retreat leader during the day's discussions. The agenda provides a unique opportunity to challenge ourselves to grow closer to God and to live the Orthodox Christian faith more fully. If you plan to attend, we ask that you please register for this event by e-mailing Fr. Costas Pavlakos at [email protected] or calling the church office at 703-671-1515.
We warmly welcome all new members to our YAL. We look forward to seeing you this weekend and this upcoming week!
May God bless you with His love and forever keep you in His grace.
