Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, H.E. Andreas Kakouris

September 30, 2009 – 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Topic Title: Prospects for a Cyprus Settlement and Reunification of the Island

H

is Excellency Andreas S. Kakouris is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States.  Ambassador Kakouris, who presented his credentials to President George W. Bush on December 8, 2006, is concurrently accredited as High Commissioner of Cyprus to Canada.

Cyprus has been divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974 and on-going occupation, which has separated Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Efforts for a solution have, to date, remained elusive. Ambassador Kakouris will explore the consequences of the continued division of the island, EU/ Turkey relations, and US interests concerning Cyprus. He will discuss the prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem and for the reunification of the island and its people. Currently negotiations are taking place between the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community under the auspices of the good offices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

On September 30, 2009 you will have an opportunity to hear Ambassador Kakouris discuss these and other important issues about the future of Cyprus.

Location: McShain Lounge (Southwest Quad)

From the university's main entrance at 37th and O streets, NW: Walk through the main gates past the statue of John Carroll. Turn left, toward the library - a contemporary gray structure - at the end of the lawn. Once you reach the library, turn right and walk down the road. You will be walking down a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill, cross the street and the entrance to McShain Lounge is slightly in front of you and to the right. There are double doors with bike racks on either side.

From the parking garage in Southwest Quad: Take the elevator to the first floor, which is the ground level. Exit the elevator and go out the door on your left. Turn right and walk to the end of the path. Turn left and the entrance is the first set of doors on your left before you reach Tondorf Road.
