St. Sophia YAL Annual Christmas Party

When: Saturday December 7, 2013
5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Where: St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral
2815 36th St NW
Washington, DC  20007
Minimum Age: 18

You are cordially invited to attend the St. Sophia Young Adult League's Annual Christmas Party!

Come join us for festive celebrations, decorations, libations, food of course, and ugly sweaters (if you want)! We will also do an optional White Elephant Gift Exchange after 6:30pm.

White Elephant Gift Exchange - This is a traditional and fun exchange where you buy one of the following gifts: either a funny, Greek-themed, Christmas-themed, or a gift of no more than $5-10 in value and gift wrap it. At around 7pm, we'll put all the gifts in the center of the room and each person who brought a gift will pick a number out of a hat. By the order of the numbers, each person will select a gift to open. If they like it, they can keep it. The next person can either "take" another person's gift (up to two times only) or can select another gift from the pile. We promise, if you've not done this before, this is a ton of fun and absolutely hilarious! Purchase some fun gifts pethia to make this truly interesting :) (Participation is completely optional, but is more fun with more people!)

Come celebrate the birth of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ and share in the fellowship of our peers as we festively end the year!

Echoes of Thrace
Music, Dance & Drama of Bulgaria, Greece & Turkey

December 7–15, 2013

Eight Performances • Matinees and Evenings
Performances are 3 hours with intermission
Special DCGreeks.com Discount Night on Saturday 12/14/13
GW Lisner Auditorium • Washington, DC

Our 31st annual celebration of the Winter Solstice harkens back to ancient Thrace – legendary home of Orpheus, Bringer of Music, whose evocative notes open our story. His melodies scatter to the regions of Bulgaria, Greece, Thracian Turkey, and beyond, where each culture shapes them into traditions of its own. Revel with families of an imagined village where these colorful folk traditions weave together.  Gather in the village square to celebrate the turning of the year!

Amid a swirl of beautiful costumes, meet iconic folk characters including giant Bulgarian masked kukeri, the Thracian "Christmas camel", and the kallikantzaroi – goblins who make trouble during the 12 days of Christmas and are vanquished on Epiphany. Delight in children caroling door-to-door playing on silvery triangles and offering blessings with survachka sticks. Celebrate with familiar Revels songs and sing-alongs, seasonal carols from Thrace and beyond, thrilling choral arrangements of ancient folk melodies, haunting Slavonic harmonies, fiery instrumentals and folk dances, and a rollicking mummers’ play featuring folk characters from the region.

Our cast of over 100 singers, dancers, actors and instrumentalists, ages 8–85, includes our Revels choruses and Washington Revels Brass plus an extraordinary array of folk artists from our featured cultures.
