100 Best Bargain Restaurants
These big Tex-Mex eateries do quite a few things well. Tortillas are house-made--kids delight in the sight of those round flour moons flopping onto the conveyor belt. Chips arrive at the table before you've opened the menu. Warm and crisp, they're good enough to nibble alone or dipped in robust charred-tomato salsa. High points among the specials are roast goat served on Thursdays on a family-style platter and meal-in-a-bowl soups that show up occasionally.
On the regular menu, grilled quail and frog's legs (when available) keep things interesting. Meat tacos dressed with dollops of first-rate guacamole and fiery salsa are Tex-Mex heaven. Also good are chicken enchiladas with spicy salsa verde--versions with sour cream or tomatoey red sauce pale in comparison. Tacos al carbon show up with nicely grilled strips of skirt steak in a house-made tortilla. At brunch, when families descend in droves, chilaquiles--eggs scrambled with goodies ranging from tortilla chips to mesquite-grilled chicken--are a jumping way to start the day. Less fun are goopy, overly cheesy chiles rellenos, a dish rarely done right east of the Rio Grande, and leaden pork tamales. (Aside from the tamale and decent pit ribs, pork is nowhere to be found on this menu.) Portions are big, so consider sharing one of the combo plates or ordering items like tacos and enchiladas à la carte.
For those of you unfamiliar with this effort, below is an explanation:
We've often heard young Greek-American professionals -
married and single - say that they would like the opportunity
to meet other Greek-Americans in the D.C. area in a
relaxed and informal setting.
We would like to invite you to join us on the third Thursday
of every month at a gathering to which all Greek-American
professionals in the Washington metro area are invited.
We pledge to you that:
There will be no cover charge, no RSVP's and no name tags.
There will be no group name, no board members and no mission statements.
The organizers of these events will never accept a personal gratuity
or benefit from the venues in return for holding the events there.
This is simply an attempt to address a need we have heard many express:
to help young Greek-Americans in the area get together.
We hope to see you at a future Third Thursday.
