Americans don't really get tapas. Oh, we like them. We consume them in increasing numbers; we're even sniffing out fusion and Asian and modern American tapas. We just don't get the concept.  Blame it on fast food.

... ... ...

Having said all that: Bambule (Bam-boo-lay, a slangy greeting along the lines of "how's it going" -- the Gypsy version of "Whazzzup?") has its moments. It's an elegant space, with banquettes, oxblood wood polished to Granadan leather gleam, and with intriguingly Moorish swaths and hangings. (It has recently been renovated to go with the new tapas menu.) In warm weather, the front wall opens for outdoor seating, and if you're doing the tapas thing right (think Madrid at midnight), that's the most evocative way to go.

The menu lists close to 40 tapas, plus three types of paella (traditional meat and seafood Valenciana, a seafood "marinara" and a vegetarian version. There are also close to a dozen entree offerings, most of them steaks and larger seafood dishes, though that's sort of beside the point.

... ... ...

Bambule belongs to Mauricio Fraga-Rosenfeld, who has tried in his various restaurants (Chi-Cha Lounge, Ozio and the new Gazuza and Gua-Rapo) to teach Washingtonians to socialize with more sophistication, but also more than traditional speed. If he keeps after the kitchen, and we keep waving off the waiters, civilized conversation might return to nightlife.

For those of you unfamiliar with this effort, below is an explanation:

We've often heard young Greek-American professionals -
married and single - say that they would like the opportunity
to meet other Greek-Americans in the D.C. area in a
relaxed and informal setting.

We would like to invite you to join us on the third Thursday
of every month at a gathering to which all Greek-American
professionals in the Washington metro area are invited.

We pledge to you that:
There will be no cover charge, no RSVP's and no name tags.
There will be no group name, no board members and no mission statements.
The organizers of these events will never accept a personal gratuity
or benefit from the venues in return for holding the events there.
This is simply an attempt to address a need we have heard many express:
to help young Greek-Americans in the area get together.

We hope to see you at a future Third Thursday.
