Theo Angelopoulos' first feature since Eternity and a Day is part one of a trilogy described by the director as “a poetic summing up of the century just ended and a visionary relationship with the century we are now traversing….” Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow begins in 1919, as Greek refugees fleeing the Bolshevik revolution return to their homeland and settle at the estuary of a vast river in the north of the country. This is where the love story between Elena and Alexis begins. Forced to leave the village because their love goes against the wishes of Alexis' father, the itinerant couple roam around Greece.
