Free Greek Cooking Classes! - POSTPONED
TONIGHT'S CLASS HAS BEEN POSTPONED. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR FURTHER DETAILS ON A MAKE-UP DATE.
Free Greek Cooking Class! Learn to make Greek classics such as Moussaka and Pastichio in a professional-size kitchen from Authentic Greek Chefs! Tuesday, May 10 – 7:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. Thursday, May 12 – 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Help ensure the life of Greek Orthodox Churches and the existence of Greek-American culture for years to come. As many of you know, the life blood of most churches is their Greek Festivals, which generate a substantial percentage of the operating budgets that allow them to expand their ministries, particularly those dedicated to our youth. Also the only exposure that most Philhellenes get to our culture is through these very same festivals. Greek Festivals aren’t easy to prepare for and usually involve the volunteer time and talents of a small group in the community who exhaust themselves once, sometimes, twice a year, to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that the festival is as profitable as possible. (Festivals are way too much work to only turn a small profit.) Some churches are suffering from a lack of volunteers, particularly in the food preparation stage, and are increasingly relying on outside caterers and paid employees, leading to less profitable festivals and in many cases a lack of that homemade touch you’ve come to expect at a Greek Festival. In an effort to ensure that the cooking secrets (and basic knowledge) of preparing all the “indoor food line classics” (as opposed to the Gyro and Souvlaki stand), don’t leave us when the yiayias of the community pass on, St. Katherine’s YAL in conjunction with Philoptochos of St. Katherine’s will be hosting two prep sessions from 7:00 to 10:00 on Tuesday night and from 7:00 to 9:00 on Thursday night. (The Philoptochos will be there earlier, but the YAL has offered its services to these times.) Authentic Greek Mothers and Yiayias will be on-hand to direct and supervise our efforts. No experience is necessary, only a willingness to learn and an ability to follow directions is required. Both girls and guys are encouraged to attend. (The Philoptochos have specifically requested guys to be there for certain tasks.) The Philoptochos has requested at least 10 volunteers per night to make this effort worthwhile to the ladies who will have been there since 9:00 A.M. St. Katherine’s YAL has cancelled its Sandwich Making for this month in an effort to get as many people to come out for one or both of these times. Please RSVP to [email protected] by the night before each session and indicate what night and times you’d be available to volunteer. (If we don’t have enough volunteers, we won’t make the ladies of the church stay any longer.)
