Invite you to a celebration of 185thAnniversary of the Greek Independence Keynote Speaker Dr. Victor Papacosma Professor of History and Director of the Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies at Kent State University. He has published extensively on Balkan issues and particularly on contemporary Greek politics. He is currently serving as Director of the Modern Greek Studies Association. Rigas Velestinlis (Feraios): His Contribution to Hellenic Independence and Legacy Today (in English) The speaker will discuss the role played by Velestinlis in the struggle for Greek independence and particularly the significance of his writings during the latter part of the eighteenth century in the development of Greek nationalism which finally inspired and guided Greeks in the revolutionary war. Prof. Papacosma will also stress the relevance of Velestinlis’ principles and ideas to the world of today. The program will include brief literary readings, patriotic songs by the Sts. Constantine & Helen Church Choir directed by Theodore Papaloizos, and folk dances which will be performed by the Return to Origins dance troupe directed by Rena and Elena Papapostolou.
