Δεύτερη Δευτέρα: Meat Lovers' Monday

When: Monday May 8, 2006
7:30 PM to 10:00 PM
Where: St. Katherine's Community Center
3149 Glen Carlyn Road
Falls Church, VA  22041
Minimum Age: 18
To celebrate our first sandwich-making event after Easter, the Saint Katherine YAL has designated this month's Deuteri Deutera as Meat Lovers’ Monday.

How will Meat Lovers’ Monday be different from every other monthly sandwich-making event?  We’ll get to that in a minute.  But first our standard Public Service Announcement

------------------------------------------

The Saint Katherine YAL will be hosting their monthly Sandwich-making for the Homeless on Monday, May 8th, at 7:30 pm in the kitchen of the new hall.  Please bring sandwich bread and packages of deli meats and/or deli cheeses.  (No condiments, at the request of the homeless shelter.)  Afterward, the YAL will go as a group to a restaurant for dinner as a group.

There are so many people in our community who are less fortunate than us and they depend each month on the sandwiches that we make and donate to the shelter.

Last month, we donated a record 890 sandwiches to the shelter!   We are so close to breaking the 1,000-sandwich mark.  There are quite a few new members in the Saint Katherine YAL and every month someone new shows up.  The Saint Katherine YAL has been hosting sandwich-making every month for over seven years now.  This event is a great way to meet new people and get acquainted with old friends, and we go to a different restaurant each month.  Please clear your schedules and join us this Monday for a most worthwhile cause.

-------------------

We interrupt this Public Service Announcement to bring you member email

C.L. from Arlington, writes:

“Every month at sandwich-making it seems we either have too much meat or too much bread.  How do a bunch of young smart professionals and rocket-scientist grad students muck it up so badly every month?  Exactly how much bread and meat should we bring?”

Well, yes C.L., there is a way, using what we at the St. Katherine’s YAL would like to call the YAL Meatamatics Method (a mathematical approach derived from the field of Meataphysics).

 As Dr. Bellas explains:

The amount of sandwich bread, deli meats, and/or deli cheese that each YAL member and friend should bring can be derived by using a simple linear regression model modified to include a multivariate disturbance (error term) to account for quantity, quality, and the occasional Greek who is incapable of following instructions.  Employing the model Y =  a + bX + cY + u where a is the intercept, bX is the coefficient of the variable meat, cY is the coefficient of the variable cheese, and u represents the disturbance between the population and the sample means, the Meatamatics Method calculates that approximately 1.375 packages of deli meat (and/or deli cheese) are needed for every one loaf of sandwich bread.

Gee, sounds confusing Dr. Bellas.  Coefficients? Regression? Estimates of Error? Greeks incapable of following instructions?  Is there anyway, you can dumb it down for the rest of us?

Of course! Just follow the simple chart below that lists the number of packages of meat (and/or cheese) that you need to buy for each loaf of sandwich bread you purchase:

Meat Packages

Loaves

Total Meat Sandwiches  @ 8 Per Package

Total Bread Sandwiches  @ 11 Per Loaf

Leftover Bread (Meat) Sandwiches

For example, if you bring 2 loaves of sandwich bread, please also bring 3 packages of deli meats (and/or cheeses).

 S.K. from Fairfax, writes:

“Dr. Bellas, I'm still confused.  Can you make it even easier for us who didn't do very well in our Introduction to Statistics class?”

Yes S.K., there is even a simpler method.  Simply write to Aris Chronis at [email protected] or call Aris at (703) 470-3971 and tell Aris how much you would like to donate to this event.  Then, Aris will go to the supermarket and buy your bread, meats and cheeses for you.  All you have to do is show up Monday night, give Aris your cash (or check) and help us make sandwiches!

--------------

We now return to our regularly scheduled email….

This month’s dinner event after sandwich-making in honor of MEAT LOVERS’ MONDAY, will take place at MALIBU GRILL STEAK HOUSE, South Arlington’s Home for RODIZIO STYLE MARINATED AND GRILLED MEATS!

(Sounds exotic, what exactly does that mean?...

…It’s meat on a stick, people, now here’s what you get.)

Chicken(Frango) - roasted chicken thigh marinated with salt, pepper, basil leaves, garlic
Pork sausage(Linguica) - special spicy ground pork
Turkey with bacon - turkey marinated with beer, onions, basil and wrapped with bacon

Beef ribs(Costela de Boi) - beef ribs marinated with Au jus seasoning, lemon, salt/pepper
Prime Sirloin(Picanha) - a round cut of steak, seasoned with salt
Lamb(Cordeiro) - tender cut lamb marinated with ground pepper, onions, red wine
Pork loin(Lombo) - marinated with white wine, and basil leaves

And a host of other vegetarian options!  (Yeah, no, not so much.)
