Mid-Atlantic Greek Independence Day Commemoration (Baltimore, MD)
GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY
MID-ATLANTIC COMMEMORATION 2009 Preparations are under way for this year's... Greek Independence Day Mid-Atlantic Dedication on Sunday, March 29th, 2009 at 2:00 PM to commemorate the 188th Anniversary of Greek Independence, honoring the Greek and American Philhellenic ancestors' sacrifices to preserve the very ideals for which this Country was based: Freedom and Democracy for All. Come share the Spirit and Tradition of one of Baltimore's most celebrated neighborhoods - Greektown. This significant Mid-Atlantic event has honored the presence of the Greek and Cypriot Embassies, many Congressional, State and local Government Officials. The Commemoration has been traditionally televised and publicized by the local, national and international television media. This year's event will draw spectators from the entire eastern seaboard. We are seeking your support in promoting this year’s event by participating in the procession and Commemoration gathering on Ponca Street. Previous events have welcomed tremendous crowds and participation exceeding 30,000 spectators from around the Mid-Atlantic region. Although this year's event offers a uniquely different format, we ask our participants to understand. This year, due to current state of the economy and lack of volunteers due to job losses, the Committee understands that to be respectful to those who are in less financial shape than others including the conditions of our Churches during these tough economic times, this Committee could not jeopardize our important message by competing for costly parade event funds when our Churches, families and communities so desperately need them first. However, a Commemoration will take place and will capture the essence of the historical message & events of past. Our Greek School and Sunday school students will participate in ethnic ware in a humble procession to the site of the Commemoration, regional dance groups will usher in the recognition of rich ethnic support to this joyous and solemn occasion, a doxology will be held, and a solemn wreath laying ceremony will take place to respect and remember those who so gloriously fought for the ideals of Freedom and Democracy for all. This 188th Commemoration holds a special meaning as we hold strong a Mid-Atlantic tradition of honoring those who sacrificed to preserve Freedom and Democracy! We give special recognition to our Hellenic Legacy - our young future guaranteers, our children who will inherit our traditions, preserve our culture, protect our history and safeguard the important message of those who sacrificed to continue the "Spirit of America, Legacy of Greece, and Freedom & Democracy for All". This event builds revenue for the City of Baltimore and provides a viable business boost especially in the many communities that surround Greektown on what would normally be a sleepy late March Sunday. Our spectators will flock to Baltimore's hotels/ shops/ and Restaurants beginning the week prior to the event to absorb the City of Baltimore's unique hospitality. Please view our website www.greekparade.com for the most up to date information or call the Commemoration Hotline @ 410-563-GREK (4735) and email us at [email protected]. We appreciate your willingness to help support and promote this most important event which highlights the bridge between Hellenic ancestry and our pride as Americans. Historically, the struggle for Greek Independence inspired Philhellenes around the world such as Thomas Jefferson, Lord Byron and the French Painter Delacroix. On Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 2:00 PM, the Mid-Atlantic region will commemorate the 188th Anniversary of Greek Independence Day. We also commemorate the declaration of the birth of Democracy and the preservation of Freedom in our homeland, the United States of America - a country whose founding principles were born in the land of our parents and grandparents. Let us not forget the sacrifices of our Forefathers and Heroes whose adherence to the Hellenic ideals of Freedom and Democracy made this country a great nation!
