TRIBUTE TO THE ISLAND OF CHIOS

On the occasion of the European Week Celebrations in the USA, the Embassy of Greece and the Chios Societies of America and Canada present a tribute to one of Greece’s jewels, the island of Chios and its unique culture, history, natural products and maritime history of the Aegean shipping since antiquity.

"The Mastiha Villages of Chios" (Mastihohoria)
A photography exhibition and presentation by Stratis Voyatzis, photographer

WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2010
6:30 - 8:30 PM

Chios is one of the biggest islands in the North-eastern Aegean Sea and is renowned for its mild climate, its beautiful beaches and its numerous historical monuments. But above all, Chios is worldwide famous, since ancient times, for its mastiha. Chios mastiha is an absolutely natural product, collected from the bark of mastic trees, a species that grows exclusively at the southern part of the island. That is why mastiha gave its name to the medieval settlements of Southern Chios, described as "Mastihohoria" (meaning Mastiha Villages).

Stratis Voyatzis, will travel directly from Chios to present a series of masterfully crafted photographs from the island and the Mastiha Villages. He will also talk about the life, traditions and culture of this very exclusive area.

RSVP (acceptances only): [email protected]

Stratis Vogiatzis was born in 1978 in Chios, Greece. He holds a BA from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a MA in Social Sciences (honors) from the University of Amsterdam, dealing with children and political violence and conducting his fieldwork in Palestine. He worked as a training assistant for cultural issues at ‘las casas de la cultura’ in Havana, as a teacher and educator for the gypsies communities in Thessaloniki (Drom) and as a researcher for the educational NGO "IALE" in New Delhi. He has been working as a freelance photographer on several assignments in many countries and participated in several solo and group exhibitions. In 2009 he published his second book: "Inner World" on Mastiha Villages. www.stratisvogiatzis.com
