Please join us and celebrities from the Washington Redskins and other NFL teams for our annual golf tournament to benefit Fisher House on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. The Dennis Walters Golf Show -- a one hour combination of golf mastery and human inspiration -- is also featured as part of this great event and sure to make the day all the more memorable. Paralyzed from the waist down since 1974, Dennis has overcome enormous challenges and has traveled the country telling his story and encouraging others to reach for their dreams, strive for excellence and do something they didn't think they could. His golfing prowess is amazing, but his inspirational message is awe inspiring. Our day of golf begins with Dennis, so plan on joining this champion of human spirit and PGA Distinguished Service Award winner to support a wonderful charity. Larry Michael, the "voice of the Redskins" will also serve as our official starter and preside over the beginning of this year's tournament. Register NOW and remember to invite your friends to join us for the remarkable Dennis Walters Show and a great round of golf on May 25, 2011. Just click on "Tell a Friend" below and you can send them a link to this site automatically. Thank you for your support of AHEPA Charities, including the Fisher House. About AHEPA and our Tournament Sponsor Chapter The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) was founded in 1922 and is the largest and oldest American-based, Greek heritage grassroots membership organization. Its scope is international with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus, Australia and New Zealand. The mission of this world-wide organization is to promote the ideals of Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family and Individual Excellence. Throughout its history, AHEPA has contributed well over a billion dollars to charitable causes. Although a majority of the membership is composed of Americans of Greek descent, application for membership is open to anyone who believes in the mission of the organization. For more information, please access the About AHEPA section of this website. Peter N. Derzis Chapter 438 – Host Chapter The Peter N. Derzis Chapter 438 is again honored to serve as your host chapter for this year’s golf tournament. It is the fifth largest AHEPA chapter in the country with an extended membership in excess of 1,500 families. It is rich in tradition, history and achievement. Since receiving its charter in 1969, the Chapter has been at the forefront of numerous public service activities within our community that have materially improved the quality of life for those around us. The Chapter has been honored as Chapter of the Year 8 times and has a long history of involvement in a broad range of charitable activities at the local and national level ranging in scope from support of numerous local charities to an ongoing initiative to establish an AHEPA Retirement Home in Northern Virginia designed to promote affordable housing for qualifying low-income senior citizens. In addition, the chapter sponsors multiple local, national and district college scholarships. The Fisher House™ Program The Fisher House™ program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House™ Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There is at least one Fisher House™ at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House™ program serves more than 12,000 families, and have made available nearly three million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House! In addition to constructing new houses, Fisher House™ Foundation continues to support existing Fisher Houses™ and help individual military families in need. They proudly administer and sponsor Scholarships for Military Children, the Hero Miles program, and co-sponsor the Newman's Own Award. Register On-line NOW Entry fees include green fees, cart, bucket range balls, and AHEPA souvenir and all registered players will receive new FootJoy™ shoes as a special gift!
