Greek lawmakers did the unthinkable yesterday by announcing a tax increase on
cigarettes and liquor to try to make up the deficit caused by last year’s
Olympics, almost doubling the cost of the cheapest pack of cigarettes and
adding 20% to the cost of a bottle of liquor. We couldn’t even fathom how that
would change the Greek scene if they tried that here.

An Austrian comic book entitled “The Life of Jesus,” which depicts Jesus as a
pothead, was banned by the Greek government, and its author has been convicted
of blasphemy and given a six month sentence even though he’s not in Greece or
in custody. This was the first book banned in Greece in 20 years. The stupid
thing is that the author plans on visiting Greece in April to appeal, more than
likely subjecting himself to Greek jurisdiction. We weren’t able to find the
last book that was banned by the Greek government, but we imagine that there’s
a reason we haven’t heard of the author again.

Eight people were arrested in South Florida for posing as newspaper reporters
to fraudulently obtain traffic accident reports to use in an insurance scam.
One of the publications they claimed to be working for was the Greek American
Herald. Now why would anyone think that a Greek American newspaper would care
about traffic accidents, unless there was a recall on overpriced BMWs?
