A Eurostat report released last week shows that Greek workers actually work the
most hours a week in the European Union over the past five years. A typical
Greek work week came in at just over 44 hours a week last year, with only
Austrians working an hour longer. Lower wages and the corresponding need for
overtime hours are one cause of this. Working two or more jobs is another. So
Greeks supposedly are working more hours but are almost dead last in
productivity? Almost makes a Greek not feel like trying.

The Greek Government is considering seeking private sponsorship for the
Acropolis restoration project that has been going on since 1975 and may take
another 16 years and 70 million euros to complete. This is a major change in
policy from the past, where sentiments of Greek pride did not allow foreign
funding. While recognition will be given, it is unlikely that will see gaudy
sponsorship signs next to the Acropolis’ monuments. So much for the billion
dollars we were going to donate to the cause.

Officials in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus yesterday released a family of
five Greek Cypriot tourists arrested on Tuesday for picking flowers from the
garden of the house their family was forced to abandon in the 1974 invasion.
The fine for such an offense – 200 Cypriot Pounds. We’re sorry, but we missed
the part where the fine was levied on those who took this family’s house in the
first place.
