The
Daily Gyro January 11, 2006 Germans to Return Parthenon Pieces Some might say it’s getting a foot in the door, or taking a step in right direction of getting all the Parthenon marbles returned. Heidelberg University plans to return a piece of the Parthenon sculptures after a meeting on Monday between the vice-rector of the university and Prime Minster Karamanlis. According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, this is the first time any piece of the Parthenon sculptures held outside of Greece has been returned to Athens. The sculpture, which is a part of the Parthenon frieze, is simply of a man’s foot. It is no wonder that the ministry announced this as “a highly important symbolic gesture.” (Some might say it’s getting a foot in the door, or taking a step in right direction of getting all the Parthenon marbles returned.) Why does a university cave when the British Museum, the Louvre, and others haven’t? Maybe it’s because the vice-rector of Heidelberg University is named Angelos Chaniotis. Let’s get some Greek resumes at the top of the pile at every institution that’s still holding Greek artifacts.
