The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

April 4, 2005

  • On Saturday night, a good group of the Greek girls who played in this weekend’s Women’s Basketball Tournament at St. George gathered for an after-party at Bullfeathers of Capitol Hill. The surprising thing wasn’t that there was a gathering of a group of cool, down-to-earth, Greek girls camped out in front of a 60-inch TV watching the Final Four, but that there were virtually no single guys there to witness this. Fellas, do you not look at our Events Calendar? For every guy who has ever complained about Greek girls being too (insert your favorite complaint here), when are you going to get another opportunity to hang with a group of girls, who not only don’t mind that you are paying more attention to the game than you are to them, but are just as interested in the outcome (although more than likely not as financially-vested) as you are.

  • We only mention the outcome of the nightcap of the Final Four double-header – the University of North Carolina Tarheels over the Michigan State Spartans – to lament as to how close we were this year to having the national championships in both college football and basketball owned by schools with Greek mascots. (The USC Trojans were crowned as national champs in football for the third straight year back in January.) Without doing the research we can’t think of a time when this has ever happened. For as much flack as other groups give over the exploitation of their names as mascots, we’re glad there aren’t a group of angry Laconians protesting Michigan State for a big ripped mascot with perpetual helmet hair. On a side note, it’s a little funny that the Spartans got beat by a ram or a sheep, the UNC mascot.

  • We caught the judging of Greek-American Iron Chef Cat Cora’s first performance. She edged out her opponent by one point by adding some nice twists to some Greek dishes, including skordalia, moussaka, and a potato in phyllo appetizer. Look for rebroadcasts this week on April 7 at 9:00 P.M., April 8 at 1:00 A.M., April 9 at 8:00 P.M. and April 10 at 12:00 A.M. We officially retract our skepticism from last week’s edition of The Daily Gyro, until she loses her first match, and then all bets are off. (We’re Greek, and that’s just what we do.)

  • Our apologies to the city of Baltimore for bailing on the parade this weekend. A combination of daylight savings time, 20-mile an hour winds, and lower-than-average temps for the first weekend of April led to the game-time decision. If you went to the parade, please drop us a line to let us know how it went.
