The Daily Gyro
Updated Daily on Greek Time

April 18, 2005

  • The exemption for mandatory military service extended to Greek Orthodox Clergy in Greece will soon end. Greek men are obligated to complete a year of military service but priests and monks have been thus far exempt from this duty. Two questions spring to mind: 1) Will the traditional long beard be allowed in a typically clean-cut institution? and, 2) How many grenade launchers do you think you can hide in a priest’s robe?

  • An Australian jury has convicted 63-year-old Peter Kanaris for conning investors out of $200,000 by claiming that he was selling a property worth $100 million on the Greek island of Kos. We don’t know who’s dumber, the investors who believed Kanaris’ promises of doubling their money after selling the property, or Kanaris himself who gambled their money at an Australian Casino? A $100 million dollar property on Kos? Are we sure he wasn’t trying to sell the whole island? Kanaris faces a possible six-year prison sentence.

  • Greek Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis’ office announced last week that Greek police will use the experience they acquired in training for last year’s Olympics to train other Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean security forces. The new Inter-Balkan and Mediterranean Security Studies and Training Center will offer training and seminars in coordinating other countries’ forces to fight organized crime and terrorism. Also offered at the center will be courses entitled, “Blimp Surveillance – Spying on Topless Beaches from 500 Feet,” and the advanced course, “Mediterranean Beach Undercover Ops – How to Hide the Fact You’re Packing Heat.”

  • In more news of other countries using Greece as a state-level party planner, the President of South Africa has asked for Greece’s help in preparing for its hosting of the 2010 World Cup. In return, Greece is asking for South Africa’s help in building golf courses. (Greece currently only has three golf courses.) We thought this was a joke as well when we first read it, but John Economides, Greek ambassador to South Africa summarized this deal as follows: "Greece is becoming a big tourist destination for all the countries in Europe and one thing it lacks is golf courses, and as you know, South Africa is a golfing destination and could help us develop these [golf courses] which will attract substantial tourism.” We’re sorry but going to Greece to play golf is like going to Red Lobster for steak.
