Why Angels Cry? Annet Artani Represents Cyprus in Eurovision Song Contest

It seems that every year at this time we find ourselves talking about some Greek-American in a singing contest.

Thankfully though, we’re not talking about American Idol, but rather the Eurovision Song Contest, to take place later this Spring from Athens. And we’re not talking about the host Maria Menounos, formerly of Entertainment Tonight, now on Access Hollywood, and fresh from last summer’s Fantastic Four movie. Annet Artani, another Greek-American from New York (remember Kalomira?) will be representing Cyprus as Cyprus’ Anna Vissi will be representing Greece.

Visiting Artani’s website (www.annetartani.gr), it’s strikingly odd how from certain angles she resembles the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson. (By the way, we’re not sure if we’ve mentioned this before in this column, but Kelly Clarkson’s mom is supposedly Greek. And somehow by knowing that, everything about Kelly Clarkson suddenly makes sense.) The single from her first album, “Why Angels Cry,” which she’ll be singing in the Eurovision contest even sounds very early Clarkson-esque.

Despite only having one solo album under her belt, Artani has been writing and performing for over 10 years. She recently spent over a year touring as a backup singer with Britney Spears and even has a writing credit for Spears’ creepy ballad, “Everytime” (the one with the music box opening). Hopefully this stage experience will translate well to the Eurovision contest where presence is almost as important as performance with a multilingual European audience.

We’ll surely find occasion to mention Artani and the Eurovision Contest as the preliminary round begins in May. Between Artani, Vissi, and Menounos and the contest itself, there should be plenty to keep even the casual Greek fan interested.
