The
Daily Gyro March 22, 2006 C’mon baby, it just sounds better when I make fun of you in Greek Anyone with a clear fondness for Greeky-Greek billionaires has two choices – learn Greek or calm the heck down. Paris Hilton’s merry-go-round of Greek shipping heirs has come to a crashing halt as she’s reportedly ended her current relationship with Stavros Niarchos. What makes this story notable is the reason for the break-up– he spoke too much Greek. According to a source quoted in Life and Style Weekly, “Stavros was with a Greek friend, and Paris was freaking out because she couldn't understand what they were saying. She thought they were laughing at her.” She was reportedly paranoid that he was mocking her every time he spoke Greek and couldn’t take it anymore. (If she thought he was bad, imagine what she must have thought of his parents who probably spoke even more Greek, and who probably actually were making fun of her.) Couldn’t she see this coming? Forget the language difference – what 20-year old guy doesn’t make fun of his girlfriend in front of his buddies? Anyone with a clear fondness for Greeky-Greek billionaires has two choices – learn Greek or calm the heck down. Of course this problem isn’t confined to impulsive socialites. Anyone from the most patient of Philhellenes to Greek-Americans who don’t speak the language can feel insecure in a relationship with a Greek who doesn’t tone it down around their Greek friends and family. Just a reminder to those out there who practice their Greek in mixed company – it doesn’t matter what you’re saying when others in the group don’t fully comprehend it – someone may and often will get the wrong idea. Be considerate, confirm that everyone in the group knows Greek, and if not, be willing to translate when expressing yourself in Greek is simply unavoidable. Other Servings of The Daily Gyro
